10 Hidden Mobile Device Features to Help You Work Smarter, Not Harder

February 8, 2022

Mobile devices can be both helpful and rage-inducing. With these hidden mobile device features for iOS and Android devices, you and your employees can avoid frustration and work smarter, not harder.

5 Hidden iOS Features

Several hidden features on the iPhone and iPad help you work smarter, not harder. From do not disturb to sharing text, images, and documents with ease, here are our favorite hidden iOS features.

1. Do Not Disturb

Nothing is more disruptive than your phone or tablet constantly dinging with notifications. Even if you don’t respond or look at your phone when it dings and vibrates, it still interrupts your thought process and slows you down.

When you need to completely avoid interruptions, the Do Not Disturb function is your solution. To find it, go to Settings and (depending on your iOS) tap either Do Not Disturb or Focus. Then, tap Do Not Disturb to toggle it on. You can also pull down your quick menu and select the Moon symbol to turn on Do Not Disturb. Just don’t forget to turn off Do Not Disturb once you’re ready to receive calls, alerts, and notifications again.

2. Focus Mode

Need to avoid interruptions without missing an important call or email? iOS 15 offers a hidden mobile device feature called Focus mode, which you can use to control the alerts and notifications you mute. With Focus mode configured, you can mute all calls except those from your team or completely silence non-work apps during the work day.

To set up Focus mode, go to Settings and tap Focus. Then select from Work, Personal, Sleep or set a new Focus. From there, you can select the individual apps and contacts you wish to silence. Your Focus settings sync with all devices with your Apple ID.

3. Pin Important Conversations

You keep in touch with certain people on your team throughout the day, every day. For easy access to your conversations with these people, pin them to the top of the list in your Messages app.

Pinning a conversation is easy. Simply swipe left or right over the conversation, and a yellow pin icon will appear. Tap that, and the conversation will stay pinned to the top of your Messages list for easy access.

4. Scan Text

Did you know you can use your iPhone or iPad’s camera to scan images to text? Scan a business card, sales sheet, or other important documents, and the Scan Text feature will convert the text to a text file on your device.

The Scan Text feature is available in any app. To use it, long-tap within a text field. A Scan Text button will appear. Tap it, and the keyboard swaps out for the camera. Simply scan the text with your camera and follow the prompts. As you scan, you will see text appear in the text field. Tap Insert when you’re done.

5. Drag and Drop Docs, Text, and Images on the iPhone

For years, Apple users have not been able to drag and drop files on the iPhone as they can on their other Apple devices. iOS 15 fixes that oversight. Now, iPhone users can drag and drop documents, text, and images between apps on their phone.

Need to share a file with a colleague in Messages? Use your finger to drag it from the Files app to your conversation in Messages. The same process works with highlighted text and photos, too.

5 Hidden Android Features

If you use Android devices at work, you also have some hidden mobile device features that help you work smarter, not harder. Here are eSquared’s favorite hidden features for Android mobile devices.

1. Do Not Disturb

Like iOS devices, Android phones have a Do Not Disturb feature. On Android devices, you can create a schedule for your Do Not Disturb settings. When it’s active, you won’t receive calls, notifications, or alerts on your mobile device. It’s perfect for silencing your phone during important meetings, especially recurring ones. If you have a team meeting every Tuesday at 9:30 am, for example, you can schedule your Do Not Disturb settings so you never forget to silence your phone.

To set up your Do Not Disturb schedule, go to the Sound or Notifications section of the Settings menu. Then, tap Do Not Disturb. From there, look for the option to schedule your Do Not Disturb setting.

2. Focus Mode

Like iOS phones, Android devices also allow you to turn off certain apps during certain times of day. It’s perfect for muting social media and other distractions while you’re at work. On the flip side, you can also use Focus Mode to mute work alerts while you’re out of the office.

To configure your Focus Mode schedule, find the Digital Wellbeing section in Settings. From there, you can create a mute schedule for specific apps.

3. Pause App

Need to rein in just one app so you can focus? The Pause App feature on the Google Pixel or Android One allows you to do just that. When you need to ignore Slack or Instagram so you can focus, simply long-tap the app icon, and an option to Pause App will appear. The app will cease notifications until you long tap the icon again to activate it.

4. App Shortcuts

While you’re checking out Pause App, you may notice some other options appear when you long-tap an app’s icon. Google Calendar, Gmail, your phone’s Contact, Phone, and Message apps, as well as many of your other favorite apps all have shortcuts that can save you time.

To access them, long-tap the app icon. If they have shortcuts, a list of actions will appear. Long-tap your contact list, and your favorite contacts will appear. Long-tap Google Calendar, and you can add events and tasks. Using app shortcuts can help you save time and get back to work.

5. Capture More from Screenshots

Sometimes, you need to capture a screenshot so you can share information with a colleague. You may want to share more than what you can see on the screen. For these situations, Android’s Capture More feature is incredibly helpful.

To use it, take a screenshot by holding the power and volume down buttons simultaneously. When you do, a Capture More option will appear. Tap it, and you can crop as much or as little of the page as you like.
